  2. caricaturist of Georgian social life. He
  3. published the series of drawings Tour of Dr
  4. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque 1809 and
  5. its two sequels 1812-21. Rowlandson studied
  6. at the Royal Academy schools and in Paris.
  7. Impoverished by gambling, he turned from
  8. portrait painting to caricature around 1780.
  9. Other works include The Dance of Death
  10. 1815-16 and illustrations for the novelists
  11. Smollett, Goldsmith, and Sterne.
